How to DIY Your Wedding Flowers (And Where to Get Them in Bellingham, Whatcom, and Skagit County)

More and more brides, grooms, and marrying people are choosing to arrange their own wedding flowers — and honestly, it makes a lot of sense. You get exactly the colors and vibe you want, you save significantly on floral costs, and there's something deeply personal about arranging the flowers for your own wedding day.

The secret to making it work? Starting with the right flowers.

Here's everything you need to know about DIYing your wedding florals — from planning your stems to picking up your buckets on the big week.

Step 1: Decide What You Actually Need

Before you buy a single stem, make a list of every floral element at your wedding. A typical wedding might include:

  • Bridal/personal bouquet

  • Bridesmaid/attendant bouquets

  • Boutonnieres

  • Corsages

  • Ceremony arch or altar arrangement

  • Centerpieces (how many tables?)

  • Bud vases or accent arrangements

  • Flower crown (if applicable)

Write down every item and estimate how many stems each one needs. A bridal bouquet typically uses 50–70 stems. A small centerpiece in a low vase might use 15–25. An arch arrangement can use 100 stems or more depending on how full you want it.

Add everything up — that total stem count is your shopping number.

Step 2: Choose Your Color Palette

This is the fun part. Pull inspiration from Pinterest, your venue, your outfit, or whatever makes your heart happy. Narrow it down to 2–4 colors that work together — trying to match too many specific shades is where DIYers get into trouble.

Think in terms of:

  • Primary color — the dominant color

  • Secondary color — supporting color in a complementary shade

  • Accent — a pop of contrast or a neutral like white or blush

  • Greenery & texture — foliage, grasses, and fillers that make everything look lush

When you order from us, just tell us your palette at checkout and we'll hand-select stems to match.

Step 3: Order Your Bulk Flowers

This is where we come in. At Free Range Flowers we offer bulk flower buckets at wholesale prices — 60-80+ stems of freshly cut, organically grown flowers, hydrated and ready for you to arrange.

Because our flowers are grown right here on our 8-acre Bellingham farm, they go from field to your hands without sitting in a warehouse or traveling across the country. That means longer vase life and better quality than anything you'll find at a big box store.

A few pro tips for ordering:

  • Order 10–15% more stems than you think you need — it's always better to have extras

  • Schedule your pickup 2 days before your wedding or the morning you’re arranging — you'll want time to arrange without rushing. We condition flowers for you, so you don’t have to worry about giving them time to hydrate.

  • Tell us your exact color palette at checkout and we'll do the selecting for you

Step 4: Arrange the Day Before

Give yourself a full day for arranging — don't try to do it the morning of your wedding. Set up a workspace with:

  • Clean vases and buckets of water to hold finished arrangements

  • Floral tape, rubber bands and ribbon for bouquets

  • Chicken wire and/or pin frogs for centerpieces

  • Sharp floral snips or scissors

Start with your largest arrangements (arch, centerpieces) and work down to smaller ones (bouquets, boutonnieres). Save the bridal bouquet for last when you're warmed up and in the zone.

YouTube is your best friend here — search for the specific arrangement style you want and follow along. You'll be amazed at what you can do.

Step 5: Store Overnight

Once everything is arranged, keep bouquets and loose stems in water in a cool space overnight. Centerpiece arrangements in vases are fine at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight, heat vents, and fans — all of these shorten vase life.
